A lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has been found dead in a hotel room in Ekpoma, Edo State.
Uwuigbe, a member of the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science at the university, reportedly died on October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
The circumstances surrounding his death are currently being investigated by the Edo State Police Command.
Police Arrest Three Over Lecturer’s Death
According to the police, Uwuigbe had lodged at the hotel and was accompanied by a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
The Edo State Police Command said the woman later left the room after Uwuigbe asked her to purchase water.
Police spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the woman returned to the room and found the lecturer lying lifeless.
She subsequently reported the incident to the authorities, prompting police intervention.
The police have arrested the 21-year-old woman, alongside the owner and manager of the hotel, as investigations continue.
Authorities are expected to establish the events leading up to Uwuigbe’s death and determine whether any criminal offence was committed.
AAU Reacts to Lecturer’s Death
Ambrose Alli University confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of its academic staff.
However, the university clarified that the incident occurred outside the institution and was not connected to any official university activity.
AAU’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, also clarified that the 21-year-old woman involved in the incident was not a student of the university.
The university’s clarification followed reports and social media discussions surrounding the circumstances of the lecturer’s death.
Investigation Ongoing
Uwuigbe’s remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.
The police investigation is ongoing, with the arrested individuals reportedly being questioned as authorities work to determine what happened inside the hotel room before the lecturer’s death.
At this stage, the circumstances and cause of death have not been conclusively established by the police.
The case has generated reactions online, although social media comments and speculation do not establish the cause of the lecturer’s death or wrongdoing by any of the individuals involved.
The police are expected to provide further information as the investigation progresses.
