Prosper Useni, Elijah Jimmy Join Zimbabwe’s National Premier League

Two Nigerian cricket talents, Prosper Useni and Elijah Saturday Jimmy, have secured opportunities in Zimbabwe’s National Premier League (NPL), where they are set to represent Mbizo and Queens respectively.

The development was announced by the Nigeria Cricket Federation (NCF), which confirmed that the two players will join their respective Zimbabwean clubs ahead of the NPL T20 Blast, scheduled to begin on October 8, 2026.

The move gives both players an opportunity to gain experience in a competitive overseas domestic environment while further raising the profile of Nigeria’s emerging cricket talent.

Useni joins Mbizo

Useni, 20, is an established member of Nigeria’s T20 setup and has represented the country since making his international debut in 2021.

The left-arm medium pacer is also a left-handed batter and has developed into a valuable all-round option for Nigeria. ICC lists him as an all-rounder, with his international career beginning in 2021.

His career record reflects his experience at T20 level. CricketArchive records 61 T20I appearances, 445 runs and 51 wickets for Nigeria through the 2025/26 season.

Useni has also been involved in major African qualifying competitions, including Nigeria’s 2025 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Regional Final campaign in Zimbabwe.

His development has its roots in Nigeria’s age-group system. He was named MVP of the 2022 National U-17 Championship after South-South won the competition.

With his left-arm pace, ability to contribute with the bat and experience at international level, Useni will now take that experience into Zimbabwean domestic cricket with Mbizo.

Jimmy earns Zimbabwe opportunity after strong Nigeria A form

Elijah Saturday Jimmy, meanwhile, is emerging as one of Nigeria’s promising young batting prospects.

Jimmy has been part of the Nigeria A setup and featured prominently during the 2026 Nigeria T20 Quadrangular Series. In the tournament, he produced an outstanding 51 from 35 balls, including eight fours and a six, against Sierra Leone. The NCF reported that innings as the backbone of Nigeria A’s total.

He also contributed 12 from 10 balls in Nigeria A’s opening match of the competition.

His recent domestic performances have also demonstrated his ability to score rapidly. During the Nigeria Super League, Jimmy played for Northern Lions, scoring 15 from just five balls in the third-place playoff against Central Eagles.

Jimmy’s recent performances have subsequently strengthened his case as one of the players to watch within Nigeria’s next generation.

A pathway from the Nigeria Super League to international cricket

Jimmy’s development also reflects the purpose of the Nigeria Super League, which was introduced in 2026 as a domestic competition designed to expose players to higher-level franchise cricket.

The inaugural NCF competition featured four teams, with Middle-Belt Tigers eventually becoming champions, while Northern Lions finished third.

The league has provided a platform for emerging players such as Jimmy to compete alongside established national-team talent and put themselves in contention for greater opportunities.

Jimmy was also included in the ICC match listing for Nigeria’s 2026 Quadrangular T20I Series, alongside Useni and other members of the Nigeria setup.

Zimbabwe move comes at an important stage

The NPL opportunity represents another step in the development of both Nigerian players.

For Useni, the move provides an avenue to continue playing competitive T20 cricket outside Nigeria and build on his considerable international experience.

For Jimmy, the move comes after a productive period with Nigeria A and the country’s domestic competitions, giving the emerging batter an opportunity to test himself in a new cricketing environment.

Both players are expected to join their respective clubs in Zimbabwe as preparations continue for the NPL T20 Blast, beginning October 8.

The overseas opportunity also highlights the growing pathway between Nigeria’s domestic cricket structure and international club competitions, with Nigerian players increasingly gaining exposure beyond the country’s borders.
