JUST IN: Our Nation Can Only Be Secured When Justice Is Stronger Than Power – Jonathan Tells Lawyers

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has called on members of the judiciary to uphold integrity, fairness, and the rule of law, stressing that the nation’s progress depends heavily on an independent and credible justice system.

His remarks were highlighted in a report shared by PUNCH on its official X account on Sunday, June 7, 2026. Jonathan made the comments while speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Law Week organized by the Yenagoa Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association in Bayelsa State.

Addressing legal practitioners and judicial officers at the event, the former president emphasized the critical role of the judiciary in safeguarding democracy and maintaining public confidence in national institutions. He warned that any compromise within the justice system could hinder the country’s development and weaken the foundations of governance.

Jonathan further argued that for any society to thrive, justice must prevail over political influence and personal interests. He noted that strong institutions, rather than powerful individuals, are essential for sustainable national growth and stability.

In his message to members of the legal profession, he encouraged them to remain committed to truth, fairness, and ethical conduct in the discharge of their responsibilities. According to him, the future of the nation depends on a system where justice is upheld without fear or favoritism.

He reiterated that the security and advancement of the country can only be guaranteed when the principles of justice take precedence over power and when institutions are allowed to function independently and effectively.
