BREAKING NEWS: How Reactions Trail Peter Obi’s Defence of Fulani Community Against Terrorism Labels

According to a report by Vanguard on 8 June 2026, NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi has defended the Fulani people against being broadly labeled as terrorists.

He warned that such generalizations foster division and undermine national unity. He also shared his personal experiences with prejudice stemming from his ethnic background. He noted that, as an Igbo man, he has often been judged and labeled solely because of his ethnicity.

Defending the Fulanis, he argued that many are unfairly stigmatized because of crimes committed by individuals who have no connection to them.

Lastly, he called on Nigerians to embrace the country’s diversity and focus on shared values. He envisioned a Nigeria where no citizen is condemned because of their tribe, religion, or place of birth.

His statement generated a lot of reactions from Nigerians who shared varying opinions. Here are some reactions:

Someone wrote, “If this statement was made by Tinubu, these people supporting Obi here would say otherwise. We should always endeavour to reason beyond our sentiments. A fact will always be a fact irrespective of the convener.”
