According to Fox Tv on Tuesday June 9th 2026, retired U.S. Marine Corps Major General Arnold Punaro has called for a forceful response to Iran following the reported downing of a U.S. Apache helicopter, arguing that all military options should remain available to President Donald Trump as Washington weighs its next move.
Speaking during a television interview, Punaro stressed that the United States should not limit its options or reveal its intentions to adversaries in advance.
“Everything should be on the table,” he said. “It should always be on the table.”
The former military officer argued that strategic ambiguity is an important part of national security decision-making, adding, “We’d never signal to our adversaries what we are going to do or not do.”
Punaro’s comments came amid heightened tensions in the Middle East following reports that Iranian forces were involved in the incident that brought down the American aircraft. Although the pilots survived, he maintained that the attack represented a serious escalation.
“God bless and thank God our pilots are safe,” Punaro said. “But again, it’s a mortal sin. They tried to kill our pilots, just like you said.”
Beyond military considerations, Punaro highlighted the economic pressure already facing Tehran. He pointed to sanctions and disruptions affecting oil shipments through one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
“We have tremendous economic pressure on Iran because of the way that we are doing the blockade, as well as they are not letting oil flow through the Straits of Hormuz,” he stated. “That economic pressure is there.”
While declining to specify what form retaliation should take, Punaro suggested that any response should focus on significant military objectives rather than symbolic actions.
“I would think the appropriate situation would be a legitimate military target, but certainly much more damaging than just going after one helicopter,” he said.
