BREAKING: Abdulsalami Laid the Foundation for Nigeria’s Democratic Stability — Mbeki

According to report by Vanguard News on Saturday, June 13, 2926, former South African President Thabo Mbeki has praised former Nigerian Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar for playing a pivotal role in establishing the foundation of Nigeria’s enduring democratic system.

Speaking through a keynote address delivered during the presentation of three books marking Abdulsalami’s 84th birthday in Abuja, Mbeki described the retired general as one of Africa’s most respected statesmen whose influence on democracy, peacebuilding and constitutional governance continues to be felt across the continent.

Mbeki noted that Abdulsalami’s tenure between 1998 and 1999, though brief, was highly significant because it guided Nigeria from military rule to democratic governance.

According to him, the transition programme introduced by the former military leader created the structures and institutions that have supported civilian rule and peaceful transfers of power for more than two decades.

The former South African leader said Abdulsalami assumed office during a period of political uncertainty following the death of former Head of State Sani Abacha.

Rather than seeking to prolong military rule, he prioritised national stability and quickly initiated reforms aimed at restoring public confidence in governance.

Mbeki commended Abdulsalami for implementing constitutional and electoral reforms that paved the way for credible elections and the return to civilian administration in 1999.

He said the institutions established during that period remain central to Nigeria’s democratic journey and continue to support constitutional order and democratic values.

Beyond Nigeria, Mbeki highlighted Abdulsalami’s contributions to conflict resolution and peace efforts across Africa.

He recalled the former leader’s involvement in mediation initiatives, election observation missions and reconciliation processes in countries including Liberia, Sierra Leone, Sudan, South Sudan, Niger and The Gambia.

According to Mbeki, Abdulsalami’s dedication to dialogue, stability and nation-building earned him widespread respect internationally.

He urged African leaders to emulate his example by strengthening institutions, respecting constitutional processes and placing national interests above personal ambition to ensure lasting democratic progress across the continent.
