According to a report by Sport Mole on Tuesday April 28, 2026, Arsenal are preparing for a difficult UEFA Champions League semi-final first leg clash against Atletico Madrid, with Mikel Arteta expected to make tactical tweaks following the injury setback to Kai Havertz.
The absence of Havertz presents a challenge for Arsenal, given his intelligence in movement and ability to link attacking phases. Despite that, Arteta is likely to rely on the squad depth available to him while maintaining the team’s overall structure and style of play built around possession and fluid attacking movement.
In goal, David Raya is set to continue as the preferred option in Europe. The defensive setup is unlikely to see changes, with Ben White operating at right-back, while William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães remain the central defensive pairing. On the left, Piero Hincapie is expected to provide balance, contributing both defensively and during forward build-up.
The midfield unit will likely see Declan Rice anchoring the team, focusing on defensive coverage and disrupting Atletico Madrid’s transitions. Martin Ødegaard is expected to play a more advanced role, orchestrating attacks and trying to create openings against a disciplined Atletico side. Martin Zubimendi could also be included to offer additional control and stability in midfield if he is fully fit.
In attack, Bukayo Saka is expected to remain on the right flank, where his creativity and ability to take on defenders will be crucial. Gabriel Martinelli is likely to feature on the left, bringing speed and directness to stretch Atletico’s defensive line.
With Havertz unavailable, Viktor Gyökeres is set to lead the line as the central striker. His physical attributes and ability to occupy defenders could provide Arsenal with a different attacking approach, especially when looking to convert chances inside the box.
Overall, Arsenal are expected to stick to their identity while making key adjustments in attack, aiming to remain competitive and effective against a well-drilled Atletico Madrid side.
