Opposition parties have dropped the ‘G100’ tag and adopted ‘Coalition for Democracy’, as they step up plans to remove President Bola Tinubu from office in the 2027 general election.
The coalition disclosed this on Thursday in a statement issued by one of its conveners, Salihu Lukman, after a meeting of the Central Leadership Committee of the group in Abuja.
According to the coalition, the fresh identity shows the shared resolve of member parties to protect constitutional democracy, uphold the rule of law and defend the basic political rights of Nigerians.
Recall that the group was put together after the first Opposition Summit held on August 31, 2026, in Abuja, bringing together parties such as the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, Social Democratic Party, SDP, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Allied Peoples Movement, APM, among others.
The coalition also sent a fresh warning to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
It accused the APC of steadily closing Nigeria’s democratic space and building an electoral system where only the ruling party enjoys advantages deliberately withheld from the opposition.
“The APC is not just trying to win the election. It is trying to decide the conditions under which everybody else must contest it. This is what happens when a ruling party begins to confuse its control of government with ownership of democracy. You cannot be a contestant and insist on writing the rules for your opponents,” the coalition said.
According to the coalition, with just about 72 days until the January 16, 2027 polls, the actions of government bodies and security agencies cast serious doubt on whether Nigerians will be allowed to freely pick their leaders.
The group asked for an independent forensic audit of the voters’ register before December 15. It also asked INEC to at once give all registered political parties electronic copies of the preliminary voters’ register and later the certified register.
