The Zamfara State Government has inaugurated a 13-member committee to tackle illegal mining activities and strengthen regulation of the mining sector across the state.
The Secretary to the State Government, Malam Abubakar Mohammad Nakwada, inaugurated the committee on Friday in Gusau, the state capital.
This was contained in a statement issued by Suleman Ahmad Tudu, Senior Special Assistant (Media) to the Office of the Secretary to the Zamfara State Government.
The committee is chaired by the Commissioner for Environment, Abdulrahman Tumbido, and includes representatives of security agencies, traditional institutions, and relevant federal and state government agencies.
Speaking at the inauguration, Nakwada said, “The initiative is part of the state government’s efforts to assist the Federal Government in formalising the mining sector in the state.”
He urged members to work closely with security agencies, regulatory bodies, and local authorities to identify areas where illegal mining takes place and establish the identities of those involved.
The committee is also expected to ensure that licensed mining companies comply with relevant laws and regulations, take steps to prevent environmental damage, and protect the safety and rights of host communities.
In his remarks, the committee’s chairman, Tumbido, said members would carry out their duties based on reliable information, respect for the law, fairness, and consideration for the rights and livelihoods of residents.
He added that “the committee will ensure that its efforts contribute to lasting security, environmental protection, and sustainable development in the state.”
