According to a report by Times Of Israel on Sunday, May 10, 2026, Israel’s military leadership has warned that the country urgently requires additional soldiers as ongoing regional conflicts continue to place heavy pressure on the armed forces.
According to a report by The Times of Israel, Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir made the remarks during a closed-door meeting with the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee. He reportedly stressed that the military is facing growing operational demands due to what Israeli officials describe as a “multi-front war.”
During the session, Zamir emphasized that the Israeli military’s immediate focus remains on security operations and confronting threats across multiple regions. He warned lawmakers that the army’s current manpower levels are insufficient to meet expanding military responsibilities.
“I am not dealing with political or legislative processes – I am dealing with multi-front warfare and defeating the enemy,” Zamir reportedly told committee members.
The Israeli military chief urged legislators to accelerate efforts aimed at expanding troop recruitment and strengthening the country’s defense capabilities. Among the measures discussed was advancing legislation that would require ultra-Orthodox, also known as Haredi, men to serve in the military.
The proposal has remained one of the most sensitive political and social issues in Israel for years, with exemptions for many Haredi men frequently sparking public debate and legal challenges.
Zamir also called for extending mandatory military service from 30 months to 36 months, arguing that longer service periods are necessary to sustain ongoing military operations and improve readiness.
In addition, he urged lawmakers to approve increased defense spending as Israel continues to face heightened security tensions across several fronts in the region.
