According to a video on NBC News, on Saturday June 6, 2026, President Donald Trump described Iran as a country in a state of deep shock, saying that its leadership structure has been so severely weakened that Iranian officials themselves cannot fully comprehend how dramatically their position has deteriorated.
In the NBC News interview, Trump was asked why, despite his repeated assertions that Iran is desperate for a deal, the country has not yet formally agreed to any of the terms being discussed.
The president offered a candid and striking explanation, suggesting that Iran’s hesitation is not a sign of strength but rather a symptom of a leadership that is struggling to come to terms with a reality it never anticipated facing.
Trump argued that for nearly five decades, Iran operated in an environment shaped by what he characterized as weak and permissive leadership on the part of the United States and other world powers.
He said that international leaders allowed Iran to act without meaningful consequences, which gave the country a sense of invincibility that it no longer has any basis for holding.
In his words, President Trump said, “They’ve had great independence. They’ve dealt with very weak and ineffective leadership on behalf of the United States and other countries, frankly, that were that allowed them to get away with murder.
“And I think they can’t believe they’re in the situation where they’ve been virtually decapitated,” he said.
The president used that framing to explain why negotiations have not moved more quickly, suggesting that Iran’s pride and disbelief are creating internal friction that is slowing its ability to make difficult decisions. He expressed no doubt, however, that Iran will eventually have to accept terms it once would have considered unthinkable.
