Public Affairs Analyst, Chibunna Ubawuike, has sparked controversy following his comments on Nigeria’s worsening security situation and alleged handling of individuals accused of influencing insecurity in the country.
Speaking during an interview on TVC News, on Monday, 8 June, 2026, Ubawuike expressed frustration over what he described as the government’s reluctance to take decisive action against persons he believes are linked to or supportive of terrorist activities.
During the interview, he specifically mentioned Islamic cleric Abdulrasheed Gumi, accusing him of contributing to narratives that, in his view, embolden insecurity across parts of the country.
Ubawuike said: “I don’t know why they are pussyfooting in taking out somebody like Sheikh Gumi who is an enabler of terrorism.”
His statement has since generated significant public reaction, with many observers debating the limits of free speech, accountability, and national security responsibility in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against terrorism and banditry.
The country continues to face persistent security challenges, including kidnappings, armed attacks, and insurgent activities in several regions. These incidents have heightened public concern and intensified calls for stronger government response and security reforms.
Security analysts argue that Nigeria’s insecurity requires a combination of intelligence-driven operations, community engagement, and long-term socio-economic interventions to address root causes such as poverty and unemployment. However, opinions remain divided on the best approach to dealing with individuals accused of influencing extremist narratives.
