According to a report by The Vanguard on Monday, June 1, 2026, as political parties finalize their candidates for the 2027 governorship elections, intense contests are shaping up across Nigeria, with incumbent governors seeking re-election and outgoing governors working to install preferred successors.
A report by Vanguard reveals that the political landscape has been reshaped by defections, broken alliances, zoning considerations, and internal party disputes, setting the stage for highly competitive elections in many states.
In the North, several states are expected to witness closely fought battles. Kaduna stands out with a three-way contest involving Governor Uba Sani of the APC, PDP candidate Shehu Usman Bawa, and ADC’s Isa Ashiru, who is reportedly backed by former governor Nasir El-Rufai.
In Kano, Governor Abba Yusuf faces a difficult challenge following his split from the influential Kwankwasiyya movement led by former governor Rabiu Kwankwaso. Adamawa, Bauchi, Taraba, and Zamfara are also among states where analysts predict unpredictable outcomes.
Meanwhile, Borno and Yobe remain strong APC territories, with party candidates expected to benefit from longstanding political dominance in both states.
In the South, attention is focused on Lagos, Oyo, Abia, and Enugu. Lagos Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat emerged as the APC candidate and enters the race with the ruling party’s extensive political structure behind him.
However, ADC candidate Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour is expected to provide a notable challenge.
In Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde’s influence is expected to play a major role in determining the outcome despite his inability to seek another term.
Abia Governor Alex Otti is widely viewed as the favourite for re-election, while Enugu’s political scene is being shaped by a deepening crisis within the PDP.
The report concludes that while incumbency remains a powerful advantage, defections, alliances, and internal party conflicts could significantly influence the outcome of the 2027 governorship elections nationwide.
