According to report by Vanguard News on Saturday, May 23, 2026, a former Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Mr. Martin Okonta, has explained why Governor Sheriff Oborevwori emerged as the sole governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections in Delta State.
Okonta said the governor was not challenged during the party’s governorship primary because of his strong performance in office and the widespread acceptance he enjoys among party members and residents across the state.
According to him, Oborevwori’s leadership qualities and delivery in governance made him a natural consensus choice within the APC.
The APC conducted its direct primary election across the 25 local government areas of Delta State, where Governor Oborevwori emerged unopposed and secured a total of 345,375 votes, confirming his position as the party’s sole candidate for the 2027 governorship race.
Speaking in Asaba during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday, Okonta commended the governor for what he described as a commendable performance in office.
He noted that the governor’s impact is widely felt by residents, adding that his administration has gained appreciation from different parts of the state.
He further described Oborevwori as an inclusive leader who governs without bias, stressing that the governor ensures that people from all backgrounds are carried along in the administration of the state.
Okonta also expressed optimism about the governor’s continued success, praying for divine guidance and protection for him in the tasks ahead.
In a similar reaction, a former Delta State Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Mr. Raymos Guanah, described Oborevwori’s unopposed emergence as well deserved.
He attributed the development to the governor’s achievements in infrastructure and development projects across various sectors of the state economy.
Guanah added that the governor’s extensive infrastructural drive has strengthened his popularity and political standing, describing him as the candidate to beat in the 2027 governorship election in Delta State.
