FC Augsburg were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw against Hertha BSC in a test match after squandering a two-goal lead, despite an impressive performance from French attacking midfielder Alexis Claude-Maurice.
Augsburg, who are currently fourth in the Bundesliga, took the lead against the challenging second-division leaders through Rodrigo Ribeiro in the 35th minute. The goal came after Hertha goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck failed to deal convincingly with Claude-Maurice’s long-range effort from 18 metres.
Hertha BSC, managed by Stefan Leitl, created several dangerous opportunities throughout the encounter but were repeatedly denied by the woodwork. Jelani Ndi struck the post in the 26th minute, while Josip Brekalo also hit the woodwork in the 37th minute. Kevin Sessa suffered a similar setback in the 54th minute as the Berlin side continued to push for an equaliser.
Claude-Maurice doubled Augsburg’s advantage in the 61st minute, showing his attacking quality after the interval. However, Hertha refused to give up and mounted an impressive comeback through substitute Luca Schuler.
Schuler reduced the deficit in the 67th minute before completing his brace in the 75th minute to bring Hertha BSC level at 2-2. His two goals ensured that the Berlin club avoided defeat despite Augsburg’s early dominance.
Augsburg also came close to restoring their lead when Tim Schnitzer struck the woodwork in the 78th minute, but neither side could find a decisive goal before the final whistle.
The encounter provided an entertaining contest between the Bundesliga side and the second-division leaders, with Hertha demonstrating their attacking threat and resilience. For Augsburg, the result highlighted the importance of maintaining concentration and protecting a lead, even after taking control of a match.
The draw also offered both teams an opportunity to assess their squad depth, attacking options and defensive organisation ahead of their upcoming competitive fixtures.
