Chelsea boosted their hopes of qualifying for Europe after beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night, while Manchester City were held to a dramatic 1-1 draw by AFC Bournemouth, a result that confirmed Arsenal as Premier League champions.
Chelsea climbed into eighth place after goals from Enzo Fernández and Andrey Santos secured a crucial victory over Spurs. Richarlison scored late for Tottenham, but the visitors could not find an equaliser in a defeat that leaves their Premier League survival battle heading into the final day.
The result leaves Tottenham only two points above the relegation zone ahead of their final match against Everton. Spurs knew a win would guarantee survival, but Roberto De Zerbi’s side failed to take advantage despite late pressure and appeals for a penalty after Marc Cucurella pulled down Micky van de Ven during a corner incident.
Chelsea, meanwhile, remain in contention for European qualification under interim boss Calum McFarlane before incoming manager Xabi Alonso officially takes charge in July.
At the Vitality Stadium, Manchester City’s fading title hopes officially ended after Bournemouth earned a deserved draw in Pep Guardiola’s side’s penultimate league game of the season.
Teenage forward Junior Kroupi fired Bournemouth ahead in the 39th minute with a superb curling finish after an impressive first-half display from the home side.
City struggled to respond for long periods and looked set for defeat before Erling Haaland struck deep into stoppage time to rescue a point.
The draw leaves Arsenal four points clear at the top of the table with one game remaining, officially ending the title race and handing Mikel Arteta’s side their first Premier League crown in 22 years.
Bournemouth’s point also strengthened their push for European football next season. Andoni Iraola’s side extended their unbeaten run to 17 matches and are now guaranteed at least Europa League football.
