DStv subscribers in Nigeria will have four new subscription packages to choose from starting in November 2026, as Canal+ and MultiChoice restructure their pay-TV offerings across sub-Saharan Africa.
The new lineup will feature DStv Starter, DStv Select, DStv Sports and DStv Movies & Series alongside the existing DStv Premium package, giving subscribers five package options under the revised structure.
The announcement follows the introduction of the new packages in South Africa on September 17, 2026, as Canal+ moves to simplify its subscription offerings and provide more flexibility for viewers across African markets.
According to Teeveetee, Kemi Omotosho, Canal+’s MultiChoice Nigeria CEO, announced the planned changes on Thursday, October 15, while speaking to advertising buyers and industry executives at The Royal Box in Victoria Island, Lagos.
She confirmed that the new packages would be rolled out across the rest of sub-Saharan Africa from November.
“Nigeria is changing, and so are we,” Omotosho told attendees.
DStv introduces four new subscription packages
Under the revised subscription structure, DStv Premium will remain the platform’s highest-tier package, while four additional options will cater to subscribers with different viewing preferences.
The five packages will be:
- DStv Starter: A new entry-level option in the revised lineup.
- DStv Select: An additional package aimed at expanding subscriber choice.
- DStv Sports: A package focused on sports content.
- DStv Movies & Series: An option centred on movies and television series.
- DStv Premium: The existing top-tier offering.
The specific channel lineups, subscription prices and other package details for the Nigerian market have not yet been announced.
Omotosho said the restructuring was part of a broader effort to simplify DStv’s offerings while providing greater value to subscribers and commercial partners.
“Our focus is on reaching more households, delivering compelling content and creating greater value for subscribers and commercial partners,” she said.
The new lineup could give Nigerian viewers more options when choosing a subscription, although the value of each package will depend on its eventual price and channel selection.
Why Canal+ is restructuring DStv packages
The planned changes follow Canal+’s acquisition of MultiChoice and its efforts to streamline the group’s pay-TV operations across Africa.
David Mignot, Canal+ Africa CEO, previously identified the large number of subscription packages and price points offered by MultiChoice as an area requiring simplification.
The group operates several entertainment platforms, including DStv, its satellite television service; GOtv, its digital terrestrial television platform; and Showmax and DStv streaming, which provide internet-based entertainment.
According to Mignot, Canal+’s experience in Europe and Africa has shown the importance of offering viewers simpler choices and better value for money.
He also indicated that reducing the number of brands and streamlining the group’s portfolio could strengthen its competitive position while improving the efficiency of its marketing spending.
The DStv package changes form part of this broader strategy to reorganise the company’s services and make its offerings easier for subscribers to understand.
Other African countries prepare for DStv package changes
Nigeria is among the markets preparing to adopt the revised DStv package structure from November 2026.
MultiChoice Kenya has confirmed that the changes will be introduced in phases and informed subscribers that its DStv offerings would be refreshed in November.
Promotional adverts highlighting the new packages have also begun appearing in Zimbabwe, Botswana, Malawi and Tanzania.
The regional rollout represents another step in Canal+’s plan to standardise and simplify MultiChoice’s subscription offerings across its African markets.
However, subscribers in individual countries may need to wait for local announcements to learn the final package prices, available channels and implementation details.
MultiChoice keeps DStv subscription prices unchanged in 2026
The planned package restructuring comes after MultiChoice decided to maintain existing DStv subscription rates throughout 2026, departing from its previous pattern of regular annual price increases.
The decision forms part of the company’s efforts to attract viewers back to its platform following subscriber losses.
DStv faces growing competition from international streaming services, including Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video, which provide alternatives to traditional pay-TV subscriptions.
The introduction of additional packages could help MultiChoice appeal to households seeking more tailored entertainment options. However, the impact on subscriber numbers will depend on the final prices, channel offerings and perceived value of the new packages.
For Nigerian subscribers, the immediate development to watch is the official announcement of the prices and channel lineups for DStv Starter, DStv Select, DStv Sports and DStv Movies & Series ahead of the November 2026 rollout.
