The China Open semifinals will deliver two highly anticipated ATP battles on Monday, with Novak Djokovic taking on Daniil Medvedev and Alex de Minaur facing Hubert Hurkacz for places in the championship match in Beijing.
The headline clash sees sixth seed Djokovic meet third seed Medvedev in their 16th career encounter. Djokovic currently leads their head-to-head record 10-5, although Medvedev has the form and physical profile to make the semifinal a difficult test for the 39-year-old Serbian.
Medvedev enters the contest unbeaten during the current Asian swing after winning the title in Hangzhou. He has continued that momentum in Beijing, defeating Pablo Carreno Busta, Jan-Lennard Struff and Francisco Cerundolo in straight sets.
Djokovic, meanwhile, has maintained his remarkable record at the China Open. The Serbian remains unbeaten in Beijing, boasting a 32-0 record and six tournament titles. He reached the semifinals after victories over Nuno Borges, Bu Yunchaokete and Alexander Zverev.
His quarterfinal victory over Zverev was particularly demanding, lasting two hours and 35 minutes. Djokovic had also endured physically challenging matches earlier in the tournament, potentially giving Medvedev an advantage in a contest expected to feature long rallies and extended exchanges.
The pair last met in 2023, when Djokovic won two of their three meetings. Their most notable encounter that year came in the US Open final, where Djokovic prevailed 6-3, 7-6(5), 6-3.
Medvedev’s consistency and ability to extend rallies could prove decisive if Djokovic is unable to maintain his highest physical level.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in three sets.
Alex de Minaur vs Hubert Hurkacz
The second semifinal pits fifth seed Alex de Minaur against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz, with both players looking to reach the China Open final and strengthen their late-season credentials.
De Minaur has produced an impressive run in Beijing, defeating Mariano Navone, Quentin Halys and Hangzhou runner-up Andrey Rublev. The Australian also arrives with confidence after upsetting Alexander Zverev at the Laver Cup.
The result could be particularly important in the race for the Nitto ATP Finals. De Minaur currently sits close to Medvedev and Djokovic in the standings, making a deep run in Beijing valuable as the season approaches its conclusion.
Hurkacz has also rediscovered his best form during the Asian swing. The 39th-ranked Pole reached the final in Chengdu before advancing to the Beijing semifinals with victories over Learner Tien, Arthur Gea and Karen Khachanov.
However, fatigue could become a major factor. Hurkacz has already played eight matches across his past two tournaments and was pushed to three sets twice in Beijing.
De Minaur leads the career head-to-head 3-1 and has won all three of their meetings on outdoor hard courts. Their only clash this season came at the United Cup, where De Minaur won 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
With both players capable of producing high-quality tennis, De Minaur’s movement, defensive ability and consistency could eventually wear down a potentially tired Hurkacz.
Prediction: Alex de Minaur to win in three sets.
China Open Semifinal Predictions
The Beijing semifinals promise a fascinating contrast between established championship pedigree and players chasing late-season momentum. Djokovic’s extraordinary record in Beijing makes him difficult to dismiss, but Medvedev’s current form and physical style could expose any signs of fatigue.
In the other semifinal, De Minaur appears to have the edge over Hurkacz given their head-to-head record, outdoor hard-court history and the Pole’s demanding schedule over the past two tournaments.
If the predictions hold, Daniil Medvedev and Alex de Minaur will meet in the China Open final.
