Chibuike Nwaiwu Overtakes Emmanuel Fernandez in Nigeria’s Most Valuable Defenders Ranking

Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has overtaken Rangers centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez in the latest Transfermarkt valuation of Nigeria’s most valuable defenders, following his impressive rise at Turkish club Trabzonspor.

The 23-year-old Nigerian international is now valued at €18 million, placing him second among Nigeria’s most valuable defenders, behind only Fulham’s Calvin Bassey, who retains the top position with a valuation of €28 million.

According to the latest Transfermarkt figures, Nwaiwu’s valuation puts him level with Nottingham Forest defender Ola Aina and €2 million ahead of Fernandez, whose market value currently stands at €16 million.

Nwaiwu’s remarkable rise comes just months after his January 2026 transfer from Austrian side Wolfsberger to Trabzonspor in a deal reportedly worth €5.5 million. His performances in Turkey have significantly enhanced his reputation, making him one of the most highly valued Nigerian defenders in European football.

Chibuike Nwaiwu’s Impressive Rise at Trabzonspor

Nwaiwu has quickly established himself as a key figure at Trabzonspor since arriving in January, becoming a regular starter in the Turkish Süper Lig.

The Port Harcourt-born defender has started all six of Trabzonspor’s opening matches of the 2026/27 campaign, accumulating 533 minutes of playing time and demonstrating his importance to the team’s defensive setup.

One of his standout performances came on September 19, when Trabzonspor recorded a convincing 4-0 victory over Galatasaray. The emphatic result further highlighted the defender’s growing influence and ability to perform against top opposition in Turkish football.

His consistent performances have also attracted interest from the English Premier League. Fulham and Crystal Palace reportedly came close to securing his signature during the summer transfer window, although a move to England did not materialise.

Nwaiwu remains under contract with Trabzonspor until June 2030, giving the Turkish club significant control over his future.

Emmanuel Fernandez Maintains Strong Form at Rangers

Despite dropping behind Nwaiwu in the latest Nigerian defenders’ valuation, Emmanuel Fernandez has also enjoyed a notable rise in his career since joining Rangers.

The London-born centre-back completed a move from Peterborough United to the Scottish giants in July 2025 and has since become an important member of the Rangers defence.

Fernandez has started all seven of Rangers’ Premiership matches in the latest statistical update, playing every minute and establishing himself as a dependable option at the heart of the defence.

He was also involved in Rangers’ 1-0 victory over Celtic on September 20, a significant result in the Scottish Premiership.

Fernandez’s current market valuation of €16 million reflects his progress since arriving at Ibrox, although he now trails Nwaiwu by €2 million in the latest valuation comparison.

Both defenders share an important milestone in their international careers, having made their senior Nigeria debuts on March 27, 2026.

Fernandez has scored one goal in his first two appearances for the Super Eagles, while Nwaiwu has earned three international caps without finding the net.

Calvin Bassey Remains Nigeria’s Most Valuable Defender

Fulham defender Calvin Bassey continues to lead the ranking of Nigeria’s most valuable defenders, with a market valuation of €28 million.

The Super Eagles centre-back has established himself as a key player in the Premier League and remains an important part of Fulham’s defensive structure.

Bassey has made six appearances in the ongoing campaign, accumulating 478 minutes of playing time, alongside 17 clearances and 20 duels won, according to the supplied statistics.

The Nigerian international has also worn the captain’s armband for Fulham on multiple occasions this season, underlining his growing leadership role at the London club.

At international level, Bassey has remained an influential figure for Nigeria, featuring prominently during the September Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

His €28 million valuation places him €10 million ahead of Nwaiwu, who is continuing to close the gap through his performances in Turkey.

Nigeria’s Most Valuable Defenders

Based on the latest Transfermarkt valuations provided, Nigeria’s leading defenders are ranked as follows:

  • Calvin Bassey: €28 million
  • Chibuike Nwaiwu: €18 million
  • Ola Aina: €18 million
  • Emmanuel Fernandez: €16 million

Nwaiwu’s emergence among Nigeria’s most valuable defenders highlights the increasing competition for places in the Super Eagles’ defensive setup.

With his regular playing time at Trabzonspor, growing European interest and long-term contract in Turkey, the 23-year-old will be looking to maintain his development and potentially challenge Bassey’s position at the top of the Nigerian defensive valuation chart.

As both Nwaiwu and Fernandez continue to develop their careers, their performances at club level could play an important role in shaping Nigeria’s defensive options ahead of future international competitions.
