According to a report by Punch Newspaper on Thursday, April 30, 2026, Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, stated that the judgment delivered on Thursday by the Supreme Court has settled the prolonged leadership crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party, stressing that the party remains intact and united following the ruling.
Speaking to journalists at his residence in Abuja on Thursday, Wike rejected suggestions that the party was still divided, insisting that the decision of the apex court has provided direction and resolved the issues that had lingered within the party’s leadership structure.
He further noted that the court made additional pronouncements regarding the African Democratic Congress, explaining that the matter involving the party had been returned to the Federal High Court, indicating that challenges within that party were yet to be fully addressed.
The Supreme Court, in a split decision of three to two, invalidated the national convention conducted by the PDP in Ibadan on November 15 and 16, 2025, an exercise that had produced a leadership group supported by Seyi Makinde.
In the majority ruling, the court determined that the convention did not comply with existing court orders, which required the party to fulfill certain legal conditions before proceeding with such an exercise, thereby rendering the process invalid.
The judgment also criticized the party for moving ahead with the convention despite clear directives that had been issued earlier, pointing out that those instructions were not adhered to in the conduct of the gathering.
While addressing developments in the wider political environment, Wike also commented on the distinction between political parties as institutions and the roles of individuals within them, expressing firm opinions about the conduct of some political actors.
“The Supreme Court referred the ADC back to the Federal High Court. The ADC is still a problem,” he added.
