According to a report by Vanguard on Thursday, April 30, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as the new Minister of Power, a decision that is subject to confirmation by the Nigerian Senate in accordance with constitutional provisions.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by the President’s Special Assistant on Digital and New Media, Olusegun Dada, who disclosed the development via a statement shared on the social media platform X. According to the statement, the nomination has already been formally transmitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation, as required before any ministerial appointment becomes effective.
Dada explained that the nomination will undergo the standard legislative process, noting that the Senate is expected to review Tegbe’s credentials, conduct the necessary screening, and reach a decision in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution.
If confirmed, Tegbe will assume leadership of the Ministry of Power, a critical sector within the federal government’s economic and infrastructure reform agenda. The ministry is central to addressing Nigeria’s longstanding electricity challenges, including issues related to power generation, transmission, and distribution.
The nomination follows the resignation of the former Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down to pursue an elective political position. His departure created a vacancy that the President has now moved to fill through Tegbe’s nomination.
Tegbe’s potential appointment is expected to support ongoing government efforts aimed at improving electricity supply, attracting investment into the energy sector, and strengthening reforms designed to stabilize Nigeria’s power infrastructure.
The Senate is anticipated to announce a date for his screening in the coming days, a process that will determine whether he is officially confirmed and sworn into office as Minister of Power.
