The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Bauchi State Axis, has issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the management of Sa’adu Zungur University (SAZAU) to address the escalating wave of insecurity within and around the institution.
In a statement on Tuesday, the student body warned it would shut down all academic activities unless the university takes decisive, visible steps to safeguard lives and property before the deadline expires.
In a move that signals a total breakdown of trust, the association also passed a vote of no confidence on the vice-chancellor and the current management, citing their alleged inability to guarantee the safety of students.
The ultimatum, contained in a letter to the vice chancellor of the University, dated April 28, 2025 and signed by Executive Chairman of NANS JCC, Bauchi Axis, Comrade Aliyu Musa, followed recent violent attacks on students, including a gruesome incident where a female student residing off-campus was stabbed by phone snatchers, resulting in the loss of two of her fingers.
According to Musa, the school has become unconducive for teaching and learning due to repeated criminal activities.
“Following a careful and independent security assessment conducted by our council, it has become evident that Sa’adu Zungur University is currently not conducive for teaching and learning,” the letter read.
“The prevailing insecurity, characterized by repeated incidents of attacks and criminal activities, reflects a clear lapse in the provision of adequate security measures by the university management.”
“Of particular concern is the recent attack involving phone snatchers, which resulted in the stabbing of a female student residing off-campus who was violently attacked in her room, resulting in the loss of two of her fingers. We hereby direct the university management to ensure immediate and adequate medical support for the affected student and take full responsibility for her welfare,” he stated.
Musa further disclosed that on the night of Sunday, April 26, 2026, another male student was attacked by armed robbers and sustained injuries before being rushed to the hospital.
The association also slammed a recent directive from the management instructing off-campus students to return to campus, describing it as “impractical” due to a lack of adequate accommodation facilities.
NANS warned that should the management fail to act within 72 hours, the association would relocate its secretariat to the university campus to directly coordinate actions aimed at safeguarding Nigerian students.
The statement said, “In light of the foregoing, NANS hereby issues a 72-hour ultimatum to the university management to take decisive and visible steps toward addressing the alarming security challenges on campus. Failure to do so will leave us with no option but to take necessary action, including: The shutdown of academic activities within the institution in the interest of students safety;
“The relocation of the NANS Secretariat to the university campus to directly coordinate actions aimed at safeguarding Nigerian students.”
It added that NANS has passed a “Vote of No Confidence on the vice-chancellor and the current management of the institution due to their inability to guarantee the safety of students and protect lives and property”.
“We wish to emphasize that the suspension of any proposed action, including campus shutdown, shall only be considered upon clear evidence of improved security conditions,” the statement added.
