According to a report by Nigerian Tribune, on Wednesday April 29, 2026, civil society groups in Port Harcourt has raised serious concerns over growing attacks on journalists, describing the incidents as a threat to press freedom and democracy in the country.
The organisations spoke during a press briefing held on Monday in the city, they said several journalists have recently been harassed and assaulted while carrying out their duties, media workers from Channels Television and Classic FM were among those affected.
According to the groups, some areas in the city have become dangerous for both journalists and residents, these areas include Garrison, Abali Park, Rumukuroshi, Waterline, and Rumuokoro, they said hoodlums now operate freely in these locations, attacking people and stealing valuables like phones and money.
A representative of the Social Development Integrated Centre explained that the situation is worrying, he said the repeated attacks could create fear among journalists and stop them from doing their work effectively and warned that this may affect public access to information.
The groups linked the attacks to the upcoming 2027 general elections, they said a free and safe media is important for credible elections, without proper protection, journalists may not be able to report events accurately, which could weaken trust in the process.
Another speaker from Environmental Rights Action stressed that the attacks could damage transparency and accountability, he called on security agencies to act quickly by investigating the incidents and arresting those responsible.
The civil society groups also urged the Rivers State government to take stronger steps to protect journalists, they asked for better security in affected areas and quick response systems for media workers in danger.
