According to report by The Sun on Sunday, April 26, 2026, Lt Gen Tukur Yusufu Buratai, Retired Chief of Army Staff, has said that Nigerian military personnel are recording significant progress in the ongoing operations against terrorism, banditry, and other forms of violent crime across different parts of the country.
He noted that the current momentum reflects a strengthened operational approach and improved effectiveness within the armed forces as they continue to confront security challenges.
He explained that recent developments across various theatres of operation indicate that troops are increasingly gaining the upper hand against armed groups responsible for insecurity.
According to him, the progress being recorded is not limited to a single region but is being observed across multiple locations where security operations are ongoing, reflecting a more unified and structured response by the military.
Buratai further emphasized that the improvements in security outcomes are largely linked to better coordination among security agencies and enhanced intelligence support.
He explained that these factors have contributed to more precise and timely responses to threats, allowing troops to disrupt criminal networks more effectively and reduce their operational capabilities in affected areas.
He also highlighted the role of strengthened intelligence gathering in shaping military responses, noting that improved access to actionable information has helped security forces plan and execute operations with greater efficiency.
This, according to him, has played a key part in recent operational successes recorded by troops engaged in counterterrorism and anti-banditry missions.
Despite the progress, the former Army Chief cautioned that the security situation still requires sustained attention and continued pressure on armed groups.
He stressed that although criminal elements are currently weakened, they still retain the capacity to regroup if not consistently confronted, making it necessary for operations to remain active and focused across all affected zones.
He also pointed to the resilience and determination of soldiers on the frontlines, noting that their commitment has been a key factor in sustaining the ongoing operations.
He added that maintaining morale and operational discipline remains essential as the military continues its efforts to stabilise security across the country and prevent further escalation of violence.
He reiterated that while progress is being made, the security threats have not been fully eliminated and continued vigilance is required to ensure that gains are not reversed.
He maintained that sustained pressure on armed groups remains important in order to prevent them from regaining strength or expanding their activities in vulnerable regions.
“The terrorists and bandits are wounded but still dangerous. This is exactly the time to press harder,” he said.
