A cleric in Jigawa State, identified as Malam Sani, has called off his daughter’s wedding over the groom’s enthusiastic support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.
Malam Sani, who hails from the Yalwawa area in Dutse, withdrew his consent to the marriage just one day before the ceremony was scheduled to hold on April 3, after discovering that the prospective groom had been regularly posting pictures of Tinubu on social media, accompanied by predictions of the president’s victory in the next general elections.
The incident gained widespread attention online on Sunday after it was shared by a TikTok account, @UncleMusa, sparking mixed reactions from Nigerians, many of whom were both amused and divided by the unusual development.
According to reports online, when community elders attempted to intervene, Malam Sani remained adamant, stating that the groom had not offended him in any way, but that he was cancelling the wedding due to his vocal support for Tinubu, which he described as “a reflection of his lack of compassion and faith.”
