According to report by Vanguard on Monday, May 18, 2026, no fewer than 50 members of the 10th House of Representatives are expected to exit the National Assembly after the All Progressives Congress (APC) primaries produced a wave of upsets across the country ahead of the 2027 elections.
So far, about 48 sitting APC lawmakers have lost their party tickets in primaries conducted over the weekend, while two others from Bayelsa did not contest as they opted to pursue higher political ambitions.
The final figures may still rise as full results are yet to be officially released, and opposition parties are still preparing for their own primaries.
Among the notable winners of APC tickets are Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, who successfully secured return tickets.
However, several high-profile lawmakers were defeated, including long-serving Nicholas Mutu of Delta State and Mike Etaba of Cross River State, who both failed in their re-election bids.
The House Majority Leader, Professor Julius Ihonvbere, also lost his ticket in Edo State after finishing third in a closely contested primary.
In Plateau State, Yusuf Adamu Gagdi was also defeated, as Dr John Tongshinen secured a decisive victory with a wide margin.
While some incumbents retained their positions in Borno State, many others across the South-South, including Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa, lost their nominations, reflecting significant internal party shifts.
In Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, and Lagos States, multiple serving lawmakers were either defeated, disqualified, or challenged irregularities in the process.
Some aspirants rejected the outcomes, alleging manipulation, disenfranchisement, and violent disruptions during voting.
In Ondo, disputes within the primary committee delayed the announcement of results, while in Lagos and Ekiti, aggrieved contestants called for cancellation and fresh elections.
The APC primaries have reshaped the political landscape, signaling major changes in legislative representation ahead of the 2027 general elections as many established lawmakers failed to secure a return ticket.
