The Rivers State Publicity Secretary-elect of the African Democratic Congress, Chizy Enyi, has said Governor Siminalayi Fubara may not have expected President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to later support the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.
Speaking during an interview on Silverbird Television, Enyi said Wike’s political influence increased after he became FCT Minister under the Tinubu administration.
According to him, although there may have been agreements between Fubara and Wike before the 2023 governorship election, the governor may not have imagined that the President would openly back Wike during the political dispute.
Enyi also suggested that there could be political arrangements between both sides that are not known to the public, adding that the crisis may have deepened because of claims that some agreements were not kept.
He argued that Wike’s actions were not completely stopping development in Rivers State but were slowing political and governance progress because of the support he receives from the Presidency.
Enyi further referenced the disagreement involving members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, saying Wike’s political influence appeared weaker at a point until court decisions and support from the Presidency strengthened his position again in the state’s political structure.
In his words, “Assuming there were agreements before now, the governor never knew that the president would at a point support Wike.”
