A soldier serving in the Nigerian Army, Private Utim Terwase, has received a N500,000 cash reward for refusing an alleged bribe from a suspected notorious kidnapper.
Terwase reportedly demonstrated integrity after apprehending the suspect, who allegedly attempted to escape from custody.
The suspect was said to have offered him money in exchange for his release, but the soldier turned down the offer and handed him over to the appropriate authorities.
The reward was approved by Major General Maxwell Dangana, General Officer Commanding, GOC, 3 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander of Operation Enduring Peace, OPEP.
The presentation was confirmed by Captain Polycarp Oteh, spokesperson for Operation Enduring Peace, who disclosed that the money was presented on behalf of the GOC by Colonel Pholimon Malgwi, Commander of Sector 6.
Speaking through Malgwi during the presentation, Dangana praised Terwase for upholding the core values of the military, particularly honesty, discipline and professionalism.
He said: “The soldier’s conduct reflects the highest standards of military professionalism, loyalty and commitment to duty expected of personnel of the Nigerian Army.
“Rather than compromise his responsibility for personal gain, he upheld the values of honesty, accountability and selfless service by discharging his duties responsibly.”
The GOC explained that the incentive was meant to appreciate the soldier’s integrity and dedication, noting that the amount was equivalent to the bribe he allegedly refused.
“Operation Enduring Peace therefore considers Private Terwase’s action worthy of commendation and encourages all personnel to emulate his exemplary conduct,” he said.
Dangana further stated that the recognition was part of efforts to strengthen ethical standards, accountability and professionalism among troops serving under the operation.
He assured that the military would sustain its encouragement of personnel who demonstrate commitment to their constitutional duties through discipline, integrity and dedication.
