The Federal Government has blamed the recent decline in electricity supply across Lagos, Abuja, Ogun, Kwara and Oyo states on inadequate gas supply, reduced hydroelectric generation and maintenance challenges, ruling out a major breakdown of the national grid.
The Federal Ministry of Power disclosed this in a statement signed by Adeola Adelabu, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe.
According to the ministry, preliminary investigations linked the disruption to operational difficulties and maintenance activities affecting parts of the power sector. It also attributed the decline in electricity generation to insufficient gas supply to thermal power plants and reduced water inflows into hydroelectric reservoirs.
The ministry noted that the affected locations had experienced improvements in electricity supply in recent times before the latest disruption hit power delivery, leaving households, businesses and public institutions facing fresh difficulties.
Acknowledging public concerns over the situation, the government said it understood the disappointment of Nigerians who had begun to enjoy more consistent electricity supply before the latest decline.
It disclosed that the Minister of Power was working with the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, Nigerian Independent System Operator, NISO, and electricity distribution companies, DisCos, to address the challenges and restore normal supply.
The statement added that Tegbe had been engaging relevant operators to resolve the operational setbacks, accelerate ongoing maintenance work and ensure that Nigerians receive timely updates on efforts to restore electricity.
The ministry reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to consolidating recent gains in the power sector and improving the stability, reliability and quality of electricity supply across the country.
It also appealed to Nigerians to remain patient and understanding, assuring them that further updates would be provided as restoration efforts continue.
