The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, Peter Obi, has said he will never abuse President Bola Tinubu, stressing that he respects both the President and the office he occupies.
Obi said political disagreements should centre on government policies, decisions and performance rather than personal attacks.
The former Anambra State governor made the remarks on Friday at the 2026 All Nigeria Editors’ Conference in Enugu, held under the theme, “The Ballot, the Media and the Task of Keeping Democracy Alive.”
According to Obi, his respect for public office holders extends beyond President Tinubu to governors and other government officials.
“I cannot abuse any governor. I cannot abuse anybody in government. I don’t need to abuse people even in federal government. I’ve never abused anybody.
“Who has seen me calling President Tinubu’s name? Never! I will not do that. He’s the President of the country, he has all my respect,” the NDC presidential candidate said.
Obi, however, maintained that respecting public office holders does not mean citizens or the media should refrain from questioning their actions and performance.
He said political leaders should be subjected to scrutiny, particularly on issues concerning governance and whether their policies are producing the desired results.
“But I can argue on other issues, whether you’re doing well, or you’re not doing the right thing. That is allowed,” Obi said.
The NDC candidate also urged political office holders to serve as examples to society, arguing that the conduct of leaders can influence the values and behaviour of citizens.
According to Obi, politicians should therefore be prepared to have their records, public statements and qualifications examined by the public.
“We must, because the leader… the character and behavior of the leader exemplifies the value of the society. And the leader must live it,” he said.
Obi’s remarks come as political parties and candidates prepare for the 2027 general elections, with the role of the media, accountability and issue-based political campaigns featuring prominently in discussions at the editors’ conference. The Nigerian Guild of Editors’ 2026 conference is focused on the relationship between the ballot, the media and the preservation of democracy ahead of the elections.
