Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has revealed the two football icons he does not want to be better than, despite his remarkable rise to the top of the sport.
Speaking to French sports newspaper L’Équipe ahead of Spain’s Nations League clash with England on Saturday, Yamal named Brazilian legend Pelé and Argentina icon Lionel Messi as players he does not aspire to surpass.
“I don’t want to be better than Pelé or Messi. I want to be Lamine Yamal and be remembered as Lamine Yamal.”
The 19-year-old forward has enjoyed a meteoric rise since breaking into Barcelona’s first team in 2023 under former manager Xavi Hernández. His exceptional performances, creativity, and technical ability have established him as one of football’s most prominent young talents.
Yamal has already lifted several major trophies, including the LaLiga title, the UEFA European Championship with Spain in 2024, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
His individual achievements have also attracted significant recognition. The Barcelona star finished second in the 2025 Ballon d’Or voting behind winner Ousmane Dembélé and is currently among the leading contenders for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
Despite his growing list of achievements and comparisons with football legends, Yamal’s comments highlight his desire to establish his own identity and legacy rather than simply emulate or surpass the greatest players in the history of the game.
The Spanish international will continue his international campaign as Spain prepares to face England in the Nations League.
