Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has called on Nigeria to approach every match with the determination to secure maximum points as the team begins its campaign to qualify for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Nigeria will kick off its AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign against Madagascar’s Barea in a home fixture at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, with Onyeka emphasizing the importance of making a positive start.
Onyeka Targets Winning Start for Super Eagles
Speaking to journalists during a media parley in Uyo, Onyeka stressed that Nigeria must maintain a winning mentality throughout the qualifying campaign.
The Brentford midfielder acknowledged the disappointment surrounding the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup but said the team must now shift its focus to securing a place at next year’s AFCON tournament.
“Just like every other match that we’ll be playing, we have to win every game,” Onyeka told journalists.
The midfielder added that the upcoming AFCON qualifiers provide the team with a fresh objective after missing out on the World Cup.
“I know we’re quite disappointed not to qualify for the World Cup, but now we’re back. We have something to prepare for, which is the AFCON next year.”
Super Eagles Warned Against Underestimating Madagascar
Despite Nigeria’s ambition to claim victory on home soil, Onyeka urged his teammates to remain focused and avoid underestimating Madagascar.
The midfielder emphasized the need for the Super Eagles to respect their opponents while concentrating on their own performance and execution.
“So, I guess we’ll take every game as it comes, but for us, we want to win this game, especially when we’re playing on our own ground. We don’t underestimate anything,” he said.
Onyeka further explained that the team’s primary objective is to play well and secure the desired result, regardless of the opposition.
“We focus only on ourselves. We don’t focus on the opponent. We have to play well to win. That’s what we’re focusing on: to play well and win.”
Nigeria Seek Strong Start in AFCON 2027 Qualifying Campaign
The Super Eagles will be looking to begin their qualifying journey on a positive note when they face Madagascar in Uyo. With the team determined to move beyond its World Cup disappointment, Onyeka’s comments highlight the importance of concentration, consistency, and a strong winning mentality.
Nigeria’s opening fixture presents an opportunity for the team to establish momentum in the race for qualification, while the players will be expected to maintain their focus throughout the campaign.
