Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, SAN, has called on the Ekiti State Police Command to arrest and prosecute the armed thugs who attacked the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, Mr Omoyele Sowore, in Ado-Ekiti last week.
Falana, in a statement, said the attackers are well known and should be arraigned before the Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti without further delay.
He recalled that a few years ago, Dr Ayo Daramola, Tunde Omojola and Kehinde Fasuba were brutally killed by a notorious killer squad in Ekiti State due to political differences, noting that the gang also threatened other prominent indigenes of the state.
According to him, although the suspects were arrested and charged with murder before the Ekiti State High Court, the case was compromised by powerful political forces, making thuggery and unlawful killing a regular occurrence in the state.
Citing a recent case, Falana said on September 14, 2026, a former chairman of the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria, Mr Joseph Rotimi Olabiowonu, alias “Metilo,” and one Opeyemi Adedoyin invaded the house of Sunday Ogunsakin in Afao-Ekiti over a land dispute, abducted and assaulted him.
He said the suspects pushed the victim out of a moving vehicle, causing severe head injuries that led to his death at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, EKSUTH.
Falana noted that both suspects were arrested and investigated by the State Police Command under Commissioner Michael Falade and arraigned before a magistrates’ court in Ado-Ekiti, where, despite pressure from powerful forces, the Magistrate ordered their remand in a correctional facility pending legal advice from the Attorney-General.
He commended the Ekiti State Government for dissociating itself from the attack on Sowore and calling for thorough investigation, but urged the Ministry of Justice to take over the case of Olabiowonu and Adedoyin and charge them with abduction, torture and murder before the High Court.
