Former Bayelsa State Governor and National Leader of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), Henry Seriake Dickson, has met with the party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and other senior officials as the party intensifies preparations for the 2027 general elections.
The meeting focused on the party’s electoral readiness, coordination of its political structures and plans to inaugurate its National Campaign Council ahead of the nationwide campaign.
Dickson disclosed the development after returning from an overseas working trip, noting that consultations were ongoing to ensure that the party’s leadership and candidates remained united ahead of the elections.
Those who attended the meeting included Obi and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, who is also a senior member of the NDC.
The party’s National Chairman, Senator Moses Cleopas, and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) subsequently joined the discussions.
According to Dickson, the meeting provided an opportunity for the party’s leadership to assess its preparations and discuss strategies for strengthening cooperation among its political structures ahead of the polls.
NDC Reviews Preparations for National Campaign Council
In a separate meeting, Dickson met with members of the NWC, with Lawal also in attendance.
During the discussions, the party’s leadership briefed the former governor on arrangements for the unveiling and inauguration of the National Campaign Council.
Dickson expressed satisfaction with the level of coordination among party officials, saying the consultations had strengthened his confidence in the NDC’s readiness to advance to the next stage of its preparations for the 2027 elections.
He explained that the proposed campaign council would have a broader responsibility than promoting the party’s presidential candidate.
According to him, the council would coordinate campaign activities for all NDC candidates contesting elective positions across the country.
Its responsibilities are expected to cover the presidential, National Assembly, governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections.
The council will also work towards ensuring that candidates at different levels operate within a common framework and communicate a consistent political message to voters.
“This will be a campaign for the entire NDC, from top to bottom, with all candidates and party leaders actively involved and taking ownership of the process,” Dickson said.
Dickson Emphasises Unity Among NDC Leaders
The former Bayelsa governor indicated that the party intended to involve its leadership and candidates in planning and implementing its campaign strategy, rather than concentrating responsibility in the hands of a small group of officials.
He added that consultations would continue ahead of the formal inauguration of the National Campaign Council.
Dickson maintained that the party was working to consolidate its organisational structures and ensure that its leaders remained committed to a common political direction.
He also sought to reassure Nigerians that the NDC remained united as it prepared to present its message to voters across the federation.
“I assure them that our leaders are united and on the same page, and we will take the NDC message to every nook and cranny of Nigeria,” he said.
NDC Plans Nationwide Mobilisation Ahead of 2027 Elections
Dickson further indicated that the party intended to intensify its public mobilisation following the inauguration of the campaign council.
His remarks suggest that the next phase of the NDC’s preparations will involve a more visible campaign presence across the country as the party works to strengthen its political structures and reach voters ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“From next week, we will paint the whole country blue,” he declared.
The planned inauguration of the National Campaign Council is expected to provide a coordinating structure for the party’s nationwide campaign activities, bringing together its presidential candidate, national leadership and candidates contesting other elective offices.
With preparations continuing, the NDC leadership is emphasising unity, coordinated messaging and the participation of candidates at every level as it positions itself for the 2027 electoral contest.
